Who is Bachman-Turner Overdrive?

Hope you had a safe and restful holiday break with lots of good eats and friendly company to help you usher in the New Year. We spent the evening resting comfortably, listening to America’s Top 40 with Casey Kasem, (yes, we know he’s been gone awhile, that’s part of the magic of radio!) when Casey mentioned that the rock group Bachman-Turner Overdrive [Randy Bachman (lead guitar, lead vocals), Fred Turner (bass guitar, lead vocals), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals) and Robbie Bachman (drums)] took the 'Overdrive' part of their name from a magazine they came across while eating at a truckstop. Casey said they liked the name and wrote to the publisher to ask permission to use it as part of their band name. They never heard back.

We thought that was an interesting bit of trivia, and since BTO has been around nearly fifty years it made us wonder how long Overdrive magazine has been around. With a couple of clicks (the magic of the Internet) we learned the first issue of Overdrive hit the market in September of 1961 so the magazine would have been around ten years or more when the Bachmans ran across it in a truckstop in the early 1970s.

Another interesting bit of trivia tied to the above bit of trivia happened just a few days ago on the game show, Jeopardy, when the $1600 clue in the Double Jeopardy category ‘MUSICAL 3-INITIALers’ read: “BTO was this group; the "O" was originally a trucking magazine”.

The answer, of course, in the form of a question, “Who is Bachman-Turner Overdrive?”

US-Canada Border Vaccine Mandate Set to Take Effect

David Heller - TCA, Vice President, Government Affairs

It has been communicated to us that the vaccine mandate for essential workers, including truck drivers, crossing into Canada will require a COVID-19 vaccine. Regardless of nationality, the mandate is set to take effect on Saturday, January 15 and pertain to both U.S. and Canadian drivers who seek to cross the border into Canada. The Biden Administration’s corresponding mandate on foreign drivers entering the U.S. will go into effect on January 22.

While constantly referring to the environment that this mandate could create, we had hoped that both U.S. and Canadian officials would recognize the effects such a rule would have on our industry’s capacity levels, however, neither the Canadian nor U.S. officials have changed their position on this matter.

Please be advised that to cross the border into Canada, drivers must download the ArriveCAN app. As I understand the mandate, in order to cross the border, drivers must show that they have been fully vaccinated from COVID-19 and use the ArriveCAN app. If both requirements are not met, the driver will be turned away beginning on Saturday.

As we can probably predict, mandates such as these are certain to cause delays and increased issues regarding our supply chain. If you begin to encounter any problems due to the cross border vaccine requirement, please don’t hesitate to forward this information to me. As we continue down this path, this information could be crucial as we continue to discuss this situation and the effects it has on our industry to deliver freight safely and efficiently.

Washington State Lawmaker Introduced a Bill that Would Increase Restroom Access for Truck Drivers

Rep. Mike Sells recently introduced HB 1706, a bill “concerning truck drivers ability to access restroom facilities.”

The bill would make it illegal for retail establishments to refuse truck drivers access to restrooms as long as certain conditions are met.

From the text of the bill:

A retail establishment that has a restroom must allow a common carrier delivering goods to the retail establishment to use that restroom during normal business hours if:

(a) The restroom is located in an area where providing access would not create an obvious health or safety risk to the common carrier; and

(b) Allowing the common carrier to access the restroom does not pose an obvious security risk to the retail establishment or its employees.

The bill defines a “Common carrier” as any person who transports goods for the general public by motor vehicle for compensation, including drayage truck operators.

Owners/operators of retail establishments would receive a warning letter after the first violation. After the first violation, the retail establishment would be in violation of a class 2 civil infraction and subject to a $125 fine.

The bill also contains a provision that would require marine terminal operators to provide drayage truck operators with access to sufficient restroom facilities.

OOIDA has spoken out in favor of the legislation.

Gaining access to restroom facilities has been a long standing problem for truck drivers, but since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, truckers across the country have struggled even more to find available bathrooms as many facilities restricted access in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

The TruckDriver.com Next Year Survey results are in, and it looks like we’re optimistic but not overly optimisitc, which is generally a good thing.

In general, do you believe 2022 will be a better year than 2021?

Better - 58%
About the same - 26%
Worse - 16%

Optimistically speaking, you could say over 80% believe things will be about the same or better. The pessimist in us would say nearly half believe things won’t get better and in fact, will get worse. Predicting the future is hard to do!

Let’s forget about the future for a minute and take a look at the present with the TruckDriver.com New Variant Survey.

As we head into 2022 keep your fingers crossed, keep on truckin’ and please drive safely!
